The Last Sleeper

(A Mayan Prophecy)

The Last Sleeper shall crawl from the turtle shell
The moons shall point to the star of Tohil
On the wings of Kukulkán, terror shall reign
Fresh blood will fill the rivers,
The Sleeper will drink for the last time...

- Part I -

In a small apartment, just east of town
A little man locks his door, pulls his curtains down
He found the sign he was looking for in the stars
It was two moons aligning between Jupiter and Mars..

He has read every book on the library shelf
The time is now.. he thinks to himself
In 2012, it is the Mayan belief
That the world will end, and the end will be brief..

But there was something else, something he worried about
That the final days were here, he had no doubt
But what if it wasn't the world that took it's last breath
But instead only he who would welcome death..

He believes in the legend of the Last Sleeper
A sort of ancient Mayan Grim Reaper
The Sleeper holds in one hand the soul of life
In the other, partially hidden, a hunting knife..

The Sleeper will be the last man on Earth to die
For he keeps the world's heartbeat hidden in his eye
He has slept the last thousand years in a turtle shell
After the ancients cast him under their spell..

But now he has been born, his destiny awaits
He holds the signs that the prophecy dictates
His third and fourth finger are the exact same size
He has a large birthmark on his knee that he can't disguise

He used the internet to research the day he was born
Thirty-two people died because a buses tire was worn
In Brazil, 18 people were trampled by the crowds
In London, a comet fell from the sky through the clouds

The signs are there, he accepts his fate
He spent the last week looking for the exact date
December 21st is the date most common shared
But he did his own math, then he compared..

Their date is wrong, but his is right
The two moons line up exactly tonight
And as the Last Sleeper, he is duty bound
To take the world with him before the sun comes around..

He needed a sacrifice, he found her next door
She is tied up and gagged, waiting on the kitchen floor
He bought the knife online, paid a small toll
It looks exactly like the knife pictured on the Mayan scroll..

- Part II -

Soon the world will end, his destiny complete
The Earth will burn due to the suns extreme heat
It's just a matter of minutes, he looks at the clock
When suddenly, at the door, a loud knock..

He tries to ignore it, puts the knife under her chin
Someone yells "POLICE", the front door caves in
He is knocked to the ground, a smoke bomb fills the air
He drops the knife somewhere over there..

He is handcuffed and arrested, the media wants him to speak
Is he responsible for the three killings discovered last week?
He only smiles when asked as he is led to jail
He is charged on 1st degree murder, held without bail..

The trail was one week later, a large media affair
12 jurors sentenced him to die in the electric chair
He waved off all his appeals, a date was set
On December 21st, the state would collect their dept.

He stays in his cell, he stares at a mirror
He smiles each passing day as the end gets nearer
He won't have his sacrifice, but he has already killed three
He spends hours looking at the birthmark on his knee

Although he doesn't have a television, he can sense the anxiety
Everyone is afraid of what will happen to society
But he holds no fear nor any reason to pretend
He knows on December 21st 2012, the world will end..

Thank you, for sharing this unique

story/poem. I found it quite interesting. For myself I don't go by such things as the Mayans,
even thought I find them an amazingly intelligent people. I believe that whatever will be, will be
and I don't concern myself in worrying over it.

I found your poem very entertaining and enjoyable to read. You are one
very amazing poet, my friend. Your imaging has no end. You themes are
always unique and well written.

Dear Sir Daniel,

Interesting story, my friend! Your imagination is a good one! I especially like that you posted this poem after December 21st. It is sad there are crack pots like your main character who are running around loose and make no mistake there are!

Peggy
