Empty Promises

You have made
many idle promises,
allowing time to lapse;
Empty worthless.

Promises made,
promises broken.
Were your words
just tokens?

Were they easy to make?
How easy were they to break?
Empty words hollow,
credibility lost.

When was the last time,
that your words had value,
or did they ever have worth?
A habitual liar.

Like an empty oyster shell,
laying on the sand;
where you took your knife
and cut away the pearl.

Making promises you
knew you'd not keep.
Why did you make them?
Why did you lie?

I will not let you,
make me feel guilty,
I did my best to reconcile;
you would not budge an inch.

Words are cheap, they say;
If I had a dime for each empty
promise you made,
I would be rich .

Poem fits the graphic very well. Luckily I can't think of a time when I was given empty promises. Must be a bad experience.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Peggy.

The only real constant in life is change. No matter what we promise someone, with constant changes in everyday life, promises are hard to keep.

I have seen times in life when someone would get very upset at someone for not keeping a promise, when circumstance completely prevented them from doing so.

That being said, I think that making promises is something that can very much be a waste of ones time.

Speaking from my own experience, I've found that I consider very carefully before making a promise. I know children promise without considering carefully right much of the time, but I can say that I've been lucky to have dealt with adults who can keep a promise. Not all adults and of course not all of the time. Consider the source. Don't trust ssomeone who has broken a promise before and don't share confidences with just anyone.
