"We Will Not Evacuate"

In room 36, her eyes were open wide
The rain was beating heavy on the window outside
On the table, her bible, next too her favorite comb
Outside, an angel was visiting St. Rita's Nursing Home

I

The news said to expect landfall inside the next hour
Shortly afterward the home had lost power
"We are going to be fine!" The owner swore
"We will ride this storm out like we have others before"

But she was afraid, so were the others
She held on to the crucifix that was once her mothers
They all sat in their rooms in silence, no one spoke
No one knew that three miles away the levee broke..

24 hours before, an evacuation order was read
The owners looked at such a massive project ahead
Putting residents on buses seems so adverse
With no-where safe to go, such an idea would be worse

A decision was made to stay and lock everything up tight
"It's just a storm", they said, "Everything will be be all right"
When water started coming in the AC, they claimed it was just foam
Outside, an angel was visiting St. Rita's Nursing Home..

II

Meanwhile, a wall of water over nine feet tall
Crept over the parish, at a slow crawl
It destroyed any home that was in its way
St. Rita's was by now less than a block away..

Frightened in the dark, she heard a new sound
Something was outside, ripping open the ground
The wall started shaking, it felt like an earthquake
Behind her, she heard the front windows break..

Suddenly the walls gave out, water came in
She was thrown off her feet, soaked to her skin
She heard screaming and crying amid the debris
She was carried away and slammed against a tree..

She would drown in Hurricane Katrina's tide
One of 35 residents who that night died
A collapsed hallway no one would ever again roam
Outside, an angel was visiting St. Rita's nursing home..

Oh Daniel,

This is so sad. But as always with your poems, so very well written.
Was this one a challenge? If so, I am sure that you won!

I've "ridden out" a hurricane before, but not one that was so devastating. There were many hearts broken over the one you're talking about.

This is a very touching poem, Daniel!!! Thanks for posting it!!!!

Hi Jan, no.. this was not a challenge, it's one of the few poems I just "write" because I'm inspired by something to write them.. in this case, it was a news report on the owners of this nursing home who were put on trial for criminal neglict because they didn't evacuate and the courts found them not guilty of all charges.. I can't say as I agree with the decision but...

Hi Peggy, thanks for the kind words.

One never knows what might inspire them.
Poets can write about almost anything.
That's what makes us poets.

Good job!
